Apple has not publicly discussed plans to add the G4 to its product line, but Motorola said it would be shipping the chips in volume before summer.
IMATION SUPERDISK SCSI PC
Motorola, which makes Apple's Power PC G3 chips, recently disclosed details of the successor G4 chip, which, like Intel's Pentium III, has a new set of instructions designed to accelerate the performance of multimedia applications such as 3D graphics, video and audio. A new crop of faster Pentium IIIs is coming before June.Ĭompared with earlier Macintoshes, however, the new G3 computers are much faster, thanks in part to a faster internal data bus and more special, high-speed memory called backside cache.

IMATION SUPERDISK SCSI WINDOWS
While those current offerings hold their own, and sometimes surpass, rival systems based on the Intel Corp.'s Pentium II line, the recent arrival of Pentium III systems highlights Apple's challenge to match Windows machines on price and performance. The mildest version costs $1,599, not including monitor, and the spiciest costs $2,999, although by adding options and necessities you can easily spend more than $5,000 for a fancy system. But the G3 processor itself comes in three versions: mild, or 300 megahertz spicy, 350 MHz and hot, 400 MHz. Unlike the popular iMac, which comes in five different fruit colors (blueberry and grape are by far the most popular, retailers report), the G3 comes in blueberry only. These shortcomings are not serious enough to dissuade loyal Macintosh users from coveting the G3, but they may be annoying enough to keep undecided customers from joining the Macintosh family. Or would he? The master had an eye for imperfection as well as perfection, and the G3 has its share of flaws. Pablo Picasso, one of several deceased celebrities and rebels whom Apple has enlisted to sell its computers, would have approved of the bold design, the ads suggest. It is unmistakable with its pillow-like curves, love handles and unconventional color scheme _ translucent blue and white.

Unfortunately it would seem quite a bit of the information on the product has since been removed from the internet. The new G3 is a gorgeous computer, at least to my eye, far more interesting than its smaller and cuter but more annoying little sibling, the iMac.

Late in the products life there was also a 120GB version released, unfortunately due to the design the cartridges could not be used in different sized models. They used cartridges that contained platters similar to that of a hard drive while the read head was inside the drive. The Iomega REV drive was released in 2009 somewhat as a replacement for the previous Jaz drive.
IMATION SUPERDISK SCSI ZIP
The Iomega ZIP drive was another attempt like the super disk to become a floppy disk replacement with 100MB, 250MB and eventually a short lived 750MB version.Īgain the uptake of CD burners and USB storage caused it’s failure. This was pulled from an old dual P3 server but I thought it was rather interesting due to having a AMD AM79C972BKC LAN controller, a LSI 53C875JE SCSI controller and then an Intel 21152-AB PCI Bus controller all on the same card.ĭPT PM3224 PCI SCSI card with 72 pin expandable cacheĪnother piece I haven’t been able to find a huge amount of information on but have included it as it’s quite an interesting piece and having expandable cache would have been a great feature. Later a 240MB version was released but with CD burners and USB sticks taking off the product never really got off the ground. The Imation SuperDisk was designed to be a replacement for typical floppy disks and was backward compatible with 3.5″ floppy’s but had a faster read performance due to using the IDE interface instead of the typical floppy connector.
